Taylor Williamson Interview
Hey Taylor, how are you?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON: “Oh hey, man. Long time no talk.” [In fact, we’ve never spoken before.]
[Laughs] Have you done an “America’s Got Talent” tour before, or is this the first time you’re doing it?
“Yeah, I did the one in 2013. We were in Bethlehem at the Sands. It was amazing.”
What has been the experience like for you going out on a tour like this, where you’re with other acts under the “America’s Got Talent” banner? What is the experience like doing that?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“I mean, I love it. Otherwise, I’m doing solo shows where I have a couple of opening acts, but it’s me for an hour. But these shows are so much fun because I get to just do my best jokes for crowds that are way bigger than I get on my own. I get to perform at these amazing venues that I hope that I can one day do on my own.
“It’s crazy looking at the upcoming lineups for other performers, like we’re playing in Chicago and Bill Burr is going to be there the next day. And Jerry Seinfeld. So it’s really special to be at these places I hope to be at on my own one day on this amazing tour.”
And so, apart from this tour, you do solo shows. What else is your life like these days?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“So I was runner-up on ‘America’s Got Talent’ a couple of years ago and since then I’ve been touring non-stop. I filmed a comedy special that I’m so excited about that’ll hopefully come out soon somewhere rally cool.
“Um, what is my life like? Try to get TV shows. I’m trying to get … sell some TV shows right now. And just keep hustling and keep the dream alive [laughs], you know?”
The special, is it, like, for a cable channel or something like that?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“Yeah, hopefully. I have the same production company that made specials for, like, Louis C.K. and Bill Burr and all these people. They produced my special. They filmed it. So now we’re in the process of selling it. Some weird business stuff, but I’m hoping it’ll be somewhere.”
Yeah. It’s interesting that you characterize it as a weird business – and you’re right; it’s not like you have a hot record on the radio that you can tour on. It’s basically like you go in there and rely on your routine. Obviously, I guess there’s a lot of recognition fro the television show, but comedy is a different thing than touring from music.
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“Yeah, for sure. And that’s what makes ‘America’s Got Talent’ tour so great, too, is people know me from ‘America’s Got Talent’ and I can perform for the families that may not be able to come see me for my shows ‘cause you can’t really bring 6-year-olds to my shows on the road. Just ‘cause a lot of venues are 21 and up and have liquor licenses and stuff.
“So it’s nice to perform for people who have seen me before [on TV] and haven’t gotten to see me. Maybe they’ll see me do 15 minutes in these shows and want to come see me do my own show next time I come to town.”
Am I correct that in addition to being on “America’s Got Talent,” you were on “Last Comic Standing”?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“Yeah, I was on for, like, two episodes and I got kicked off.”
[Laughs] And I’m guessing the reason you did so much better on “America’s Got Talent” was because you, like, really beefed up in the meantime?
“[Laughs] Beefed up? Is that what you said?”
Yeah, that’s what I said.
“Yeah, that’s pretty much it. No, I’m glad it worked out like that. Like, I mean, I respect …’Last Comic Standing’ changed my life, too. I was able to do universities and it helped me go up from the level I was at. But ‘America’s Got Talent’ took me to another whole level, to be sure.”
And what, seriously, do you think was the difference? Why do you think you did so well on “America’s Got Talent”? Because it’s a broader-based audience? What do you think?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“I mean – this is the boring, bad, interview answer – but ‘Last Comic Standing’ isn’t voting. There’s politics involved and they already … they’re putting the final 10 together and they already have five people put through the night before. And before I even performed, they picked two nerdy guys. And you can’t have three nerdy guys on the same show, so …
“I think it came down to casting for me on that show. On ‘America’s Got Talent,’ the reason I did so well, I think, is because Heidi Klum and I got to have a silly, funny, on-screen relationship on that show where she didn’t think I was funny or appropriate for children, and then I wrote some jokes that were tongue-in-cheek appropriate for children and I got to have a story line on a competition reality show, which doesn’t really happen.
“And they brought me back a couple of times, too. For some reason, I was able to make a connection with the audience. So I give Heidi Klum credit for the whole career I have.”
Yeah, the sexual sparks just flew. I remember seeing that, yeah.
“Yeah, we, we … were so in love.”
In all seriousness, have you had any contact with her since the show?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“Yeah. I mean, we don’t hang out too much. Like, she always wants to, but I’m, like, ‘Heidi, leave me alone.’ But they brought me back to ‘America’s Got Talent’ last year to do this silly sketch with her, and she’s so funny and she’s so nice. She didn’t have to do anything. But she was willing to play along longer. And I went back to ‘America’s Got Talent’ this year and I saw her for a little bit.
“But, no, we have busy lives. We each have four children and a couple of ex-husbands. We have a lot going on.”
[Laughs] Hey, I have to ask you this … and this is true of any person in the spotlight or any person on TV. How much of what we see on TV of you is a character and how much of it is real?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“Um, I mean it’s me. I don’t know if this is a compliment or an insult or just a statement [Laughs]. But people say to me, like, ‘You’re the same onstage as you are off-stage.’ Obviously when I’m doing my actual stand-up routine, it’s – at least the material – I say is exaggerated. I don’t really believe all the horrible, stupid silly things I say. And I play dumb sometimes.
“But, I mean, I like that I … I hope that I come off as authentic, ‘cause I’m a silly idiot in real life, too, you know? “
[Laughs]
“So it’s me. It’s pretty much 100 percent me.”
Those are the questions I had prepared for you. Is there anything you’d want to say or see in my story?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“It’s so generous of you to ask that. I’d love to get across I’m so thankful to ‘America’s Go Talent’ that I never thought, I never dreamed of, that I get to have a young following. It’s so special to me when I have, like, kids and teen-agers coming up to me and that come to my shows and it’s the most special thing to me that you never think of, ever having. It just doesn’t make sense.
“But ‘America’s Got Talent’ is the only opportunity to have that, really, unless, like kids have parents that let them watch crazy stuff, you know? So that’s what I love about these ‘America’s Got Talent’ shows: I get to perform for the people who voted for me and made my dreams come true.
“It sounds so cliché and cheesy, but it’s so true. Like the reason I have a career is people voting for me and believing in me. And now I get to perform for them and say thank you and hopefully make them laugh again.”
Anything else you want to say?
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON:“I’m so excited to come back to Bethlehem, the hometown of Jesus Christ.”
Yeah, absolutely. A lot of his followers come here every year.
