Tangaza University College

Tangaza College is a Catholic University College jointly owned by the member religious congregations. It has its roots in Catholic Tradition, especially as planted and nourished in East Africa (the AMECEA region) through the missionary endeavors which spanned the late 19th and entire 20th centuries. Now in the 21st century, and in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, the people of Tangaza recognize that they themselves are sent to participate in the renewal and development of that Tradition. As befits an institution of higher learning this will be realized primarily through commitment to academic excellence and the personal transformation of its students.

Currently, the college offers undergraduate degrees, masters degree, diploma programmes and a number of certificate programmes in its various institutes. The phenomenal growth of the College is a reflection of the importance that the Kenya Nation attaches to development in those fields and in education in general, all these being rounded up with a religious and spiritual touch rendering the student an all round formation at Tangaza.

The School of Theology of Tangaza College offers courses leading to the following awards:

STB: Ecclesiastical Degree of Baccalaureate in Theology (Catholic University of Eastern Africa)
BATh: Bachelor of Arts in Theology (Civil Degree) (Catholic University of Eastern Africa)
Four-Year Diploma in Theology (Internal Diploma, valid for ordination)

Course Brief

The aims of these programs are:

To introduce the students to the systematic study of Catholic doctrine, according to the scientific method proper to theology.
To help the students deepen their own living faith so that they can share it more effectively with others in the building up of a true Christian community.
To provide the students with the knowledge necessary for effective reflection on the life situation and ever-changing pastoral needs of the local Church

It also offers the possibility of other academic programs for people interested in a good theological or philosophical formation:

One-year Certificate in Philosophy (for students without previous studies, who would like to proceed to do a Degree in theology).

Postgraduate Programs

Tangaza School of Theology offers two Masters Degrees through an affiliation with Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA:

MATh: Master of Arts in Theology (Duquesne University)
MPM: Master in Pastoral Ministry (Duquesne University)

The School of Theology is in the process of establishing an aggregation with Urbanian University in Rome, in view of a Second Cycle of ecclesiastical theological studies for a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. This program has the following goals: To initiate and train students in scientific methods of research and the appropriate use of theological sources. To prepare students to teach theology in Seminaries and/or undertake doctoral studies in theology. To help students to develop theological symbols for the process of incarnating the Christian message in the African context. To facilitate a sustained study and reflection on the mission and ministry of religious that is both deeply theological and effectively pastoral.

Programme Description
Social transformation involves a new organization of all social economic, cultural and technological identities involving women, minorities, professionals and communities in order to improve human dignity and social justice. Social transformation means creative strategic influence and collective decision for realisation of human rights. Africa at the present time is setting down the foundations of the future shape of its societies. It is of crucial importance to train professional leadership in the area of governance, economic planning, social policy, mass organizations for the rural and urban poor, and advocacy groups on how to bring about social transformation for sustainable development.

Master Of Education In Guidance & Counselling Psychology

Programme Description
Objective of the Programme

To prepare educational professionals in Guidance and Counselling for purposes of helping children, adolescents and youth.

Admission requirement

Straight entry: Bachelor of Education, with a minimum of Upper Second Class Honors or its equivalence from a recognized University.

Exempted entry: Bachelor Education with Lower Second Class Honors or its equivalent from a recognized University with relevant work experience of not less than three years.

Entry with Bridging: Bachelor’s degree in any subject, with a minimum of Upper Second Class Honors or its equivalence from a recognized University, with 5 units of basic courses in psychology and/or counselling.

Duration

The course lasts 2 years ,6 semesters

Admission times
Mid-August – mid-December: 1st semester (August intake)
Mid-January to mid-May: 2nd semester (January intake)
May-July: 1st semester for May intake students (May intake)

BA Admission Requirements
Applicants for the Bachelor’s degree programmes must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:
Either (1) Be a holder of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate (or an equivalent examination) with a minimum aggregate of C+. or (2) Be a holder of Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education certificate (or an equivalent examination) with a minimum of two principal passes and one subsidiary pass. or (3) Be a holder of a diploma or professional certificate in a relevant discipline from an institution recognized by the CUEA Senate having attained a mean grade of C plain in the KCSE (or its equivalent). or (4) Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the CUEA Senate as equivalent to any of the above.

Diploma Admission Requirements
i. Applicants with KCSE C- and above.
ii. Applicants with KCSE D+ who also have completed a one year Certificate program equivalent to 27credits/ 9 units.
iii. Applicants whose qualifications from other countries are equivalent to the minimum requirements for admission into a Diploma Program in Kenya.
iv. Applicants who will have passed an interview.

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
In collaboration with the School of Theology, ISRF now offers BA programme in Theology from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, through the school of Theology, Tangaza University College Starting form August 2012. This BA in Theology also includes an appended diploma in theology with specializations in religious formation/spiritual guidance or spirituality. The main goal of this collaboration is to offer the ISRF Students the professional competence with good theological foundation as a basis for more holistic approach to spiritual formation, spiritual guidance and personal spiritual development.

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
The certificate introduces the student to the principle of leadership and management that are shaped by an understanding the human person based on Catholic Social Teaching. Students are required to take 30 credits. Those who wish to continue to the Diploma but entered with D+ must achieve an average of B in their first 2 semesters and write an integration paper.
