Tammel Esco, a 42-year-old man from Yonkers, has been charged with attempted murder after a brutal attack on an Asian woman’s head captured by a security camera.
Since the pandemic, crimes against Asian Americans have increased in New York and abroad. According to a recent nationwide poll conducted by the nonprofit “Stop AAPI Hate,” over 10,000 incidences have been reported in the last two years alone.
Race was by far the most common reason for a discriminatory encounter, with 91.5 percent of the 10,905 reports citing race as a reason.
Last week, a man in New York state was charged with attempted murder in what police characterized as a “brutal hate crime” against an Asian woman, with video of the incident showing the victim being punched over 100 times.

Officers apprehended Esco shortly after when he was still outside the premises. On Monday, Yonkers police announced the arrest and released a security video from the entryway area of the building.
The video showed that the woman was attempting to open the second door into the lobby when she was struck in the head from behind and fell to the ground. She was hit 125 times, stomped seven times, and spat on.
The woman, who has not been named, is stable and recovering in a hospital, according to authorities. She sustained face bone fractures as well as brain bleeding. Officials believe he shouted her a racial insult moments before the incident.
