Aperture Foundation posted a selection of Soren’s Fantasy Life photos in 2017, with text by Dave Eggers. The e-book was launched just earlier to a first-rate exhibition at San Francisco City Hall, also titled Fantasy Life, which displayed over 180 pictures of her. Also inside the summer of 2017, EUQINOMprojects in San Francisco exhibited work from the Surface Tension series, in which all photos have photographed the use of 8 x 10 sheets of film. Soren started brooding about the gunk on her screen while reading an e-book throughout a flight in 2012 and found out the frenetic marks reflected the chaos she encountered online. She says as i quote, “I sometimes have so many windows up on my computer display that I can’t find the one I’m searching for, or I stumble upon an Amazon cart that I never without a doubt hit the buy or a calendar entry where I meant to check the time but an email popped up,” she says. “I felt like the ones gestures pondered that push and pull.”
Meggan Gould explored this idea with a challenge of the identical call in 2014, scanning clean screens to focus on the smudges and smears. Soren takes a strange approach by choosing a random link from her browser records or pulling up an image of a cat to provide a background, takes a screenshot and shoots it with a large display camera. Then she cleans the display, waits a few days or weeks for it to get smudged, and repeats the process.
Sometimes, the streaks make instinct pix under them, giving Soren’s photographs a painterly look. More than that, all those smudges make up the infinite notifications, reminders, messages, and swipes vying to your attention.
