Is System Of A Down Still Together?
Yes, System Of A Down is still together. However, the band has not released a full-length record since the Memorize and Hyptonize in 2005.
Since the release of their self-titled debut alum, System Of A Down, the American heavy metal band released another 5 studio albums.
Following the hiatus in 2006, due to multiple reasons, the band ultimately decided to reconvene in 2010.
Tanakian took to Facebook to open up about the situation with a comprehensive explanation of his perspective on the matter. The guitarist wrote:
It is true that I and only I was responsible for the hiatus SOAD took in 2006. Everyone else wanted to continue at the same pace to tour and make records. I didn’t. Why? For numerous reasons.
Tanakian mentioned that their music was getting redundant and repetitive, and didn’t feel the same connection with their 2005 albums as he did with the previous ones.
He also brought up the issue of equal pay.
Even after the reunion, the band had a lot of internal issues which prevented them from creating a new record.
On July 13, 2018, drummer John Dolmayan also expressed his opinion on Instagram regarding the band’s failure to give their fans a fresh record. He captioned:
Each member of the band is equally responsible for both our incredible success on our previous recordings and our unbelievable failure to get along and make music together. Not one of us, rather ALL of us are to blame. Egomania, eccentricities, megalomania – and sometimes just stupidity all play roles.
To our fans, I’m truly sorry for letting you down , to the songs that could have been-I’m sorry you haven’t.
Despite the meltdown, the group did come together in the end and released two new songs in 2020.
Is System Of A Down Christian?
Whether System Of A Down is a Christian band or not, is a matter of huge debate.
Although the origin and nationality of the crew may deceive people into thinking it’s a Christian band, the members themselves haven’t promoted any religious agendas in the name of the band.
However, some band members have expressed their own personal views regarding religion.
The lead vocalist Serj appreciates spiritual beliefs but is wary of how organized religion can be used to serve other plans. Daron has expressed a similar sentiment.
Judging by the pictures of the cross and graphics commemorating Armenia becoming a Christian nation, the drummer John is likely into the Christian religion.
As for Shavo, the bassist has kept his religious and spiritual opinions to himself.

The singles ‘Sugar’ and ‘Spiders’ soon became radio choices and the music videos for both songs were frequently circulated on the musical cable TV channel MTV.
The band had a breakthrough when they released their second album, Toxicity, which charted at no.1 on both American and Canadian charts. The album is certified 3 times multi-platinum in the U.S.
The fan-favorite single Chop Suey! was later taken off the radio following the 9/11 attacks as it contained politically sensitive lyrics. Despite being removed, the song was nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2002.
In November 2002, the group released the final version of their unfinished tracks from Toxicity as their third album titled Steal This Album!, which arrived following the disappointment of the fans to the incomplete work.
In 2004, the band planned on releasing the follow-up to the third album; a double album, which will be six months apart.
They released the first part of the double, Mezmerize, in May 2005 which debuted at No.1 across many parts including the U.S. and Canada of the world making it the band’s 2nd No.1 album.
The lead single, B.Y.O.B, won the Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006 and also earned nominations for multiple other awards.
As mentioned, the band released the second part of the double, Hypnotize, on November 22, 2005, which charted at No.1 on US Billboard placing SOAD amongst the few elites to have two studio albums debut at No. 1 in the same year.
In late 2020, the band released a double A-side single ‘Protect the Land’ and ‘Genocidal Humanoidz’, marking it their first single in 14 years since ‘Lonely Days’ in 2006.
