Switchfoot is a Christian alternative rock band from San Diego, California, that was formed in 1997. They are Jon Foreman (lead vocals, guitar), Tim Foreman (bass guitar, backing vocals), Chad Butler (drums, percussion), Jerome Fontmillas (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Drew Shirley (bass guitar, backing vocals) (guitar, backing vocals). Switchfoot initially garnered widespread attention in 2002, when four of their songs were included in the film A Walk to Remember, after early triumphs in the Christian rock arena. It was because of this exposure that they were signed to a big label and released their first studio album,
The Beautiful Letdown, in 2003, which included the singles “Meant to Live” and “Dare You to Move.” The album went on to sell more than 2.6 million copies worldwide. Since then, they have been known for their high-energy live performances, and their seventh studio album Hello Hurricane was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. According to Jon Foreman, the name “Switchfoot” is derived from a surfing slang expression. “We all like surfing and have been doing it for the most of our lives, so the name made sense to us. To swap your feet is to adopt a new posture in the opposite way from where you were before. It’s about mobility and change, and it’s about viewing life and music in a new manner.”
