Due to health issues, Suzy Merchant has resigned as the head coach of Michigan State’s women’s basketball team.
In a statement issued by the school on Monday, Merchant stated, “I have decided that it is in my best interest after much thought and consultation with my health care providers.
After being involved in a one-car accident following a medical incident in late January, the 53-year-old Merchant had not coached the Spartans.
She fainted and fell on the ground during a game six seasons ago, and doctors later found she had a cardiac condition.
While the school conducts a search for a new head coach for the squad, associate head coach Dean Lockwood, who stood in for Merchant this season, will manage the team in an interim capacity.
