Suzanne “Suzy” Chaffee is a former Olympic alpine ski racer and actress who was born in Rutland, Vermont on November 29, 1946. Following her racing career, she worked as a model for Ford Models in New York before becoming the world’s best freestyle ballet skier in the early 1970s. Suzy Chapstick, her nickname from her time as a spokeswoman for ChapStick lip balm in the 1970s, is probably her most well-known moniker. Chaffee’s mother, who taught her to ski when she was three years old, would have been a good fit for the US ski team in the 1940 Winter Olympics. While a student at the University of Denver, Chaffee tested out for the inaugural US Ski Team and was selected. At the 1966 World Championships, she finished fourth in the downhill. Despite a season-ending accident in the World Cup Series at Vail in 1967, she finished the season ranked 10th in Women’s downhill skiing and 16th in
Women’s All-Around skiing. At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, Chaffee was chosen captain of the US Women’s team and one of the favourites in the downhill. She placed 28th in the downhill, blaming her bad performance on the incorrect wax, but her skin-tight silver racing outfit created a worldwide impact. After the 1968 Olympics, she stopped competing in ski races. She also won the World Freestyle Skiing Championships three times (1971–73). In 1988, she was named to the National Ski Hall of Fame. Chaffee advocated for Title IX legislation as a social activist (equal opportunity for women in school sports). She was the first woman elected to the board of the United States Olympic Committee, and she has served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness for four US presidents. She was a co-founder of Native Voices in 1996.
