Susan Walters Interview

Q: What drew Susan Walters to Murdered at 17? Where was the hook for the movie to you?

Susan Walters: [Producer] Pierre David offered me the part. I’d worked for him before and I really wanted to work with him again. [It was] an opportunity to play this mom and kind of bring life to her.

It was that thing where you have that child who you’re hoping isn’t the bad person, but they have something about them, and you’re like oh my God, what if they really did do this? It’s that trying to be supportive of your child, and yet you also have a fear that your child’s done something like not okay. That was definitely interesting to me.

I’m not giving anything away by saying [her daughter] has this condition that causes her to not remember when she gets very angry and she blacks out. And so I think the interesting part of the movie is the whodunit aspect.

Q: What happens in the movie obviously complicates the relationship between your character Carley Emerson and her daughter Brooke. What’s their relationship like before the movie? Is Carley going to believe her, or is there already a certain degree of wariness?

Susan Walters: I think they were in a very good place. We still had a lot of nice moments together, and then she starts seeing this guy [Jake Campali, played by Blake Burt] and any mother would be nervous about that. He was a little too old, moving a little too fast. [Carley]’s a single mom, but she has a boyfriend and she’s watching her daughter may be moving too quickly.

It was really easy to have a good relationship with Cristine [Rispoli], who plays my daughter, because our scenes were just really natural together.

Q: You’ve played several other TV moms, including Carol Lockwood on The Vampire Diaries and Diane Hunter on The Fosters. How does Carley Emerson in Murdered at 17 compare to Susan Walters’ other TV mothers?

Susan Walters: She has typical mothering qualities, in that she doesn’t want to believe her child is the bad guy. Mothers do that. It’s really different in that I felt really connected to her as a mother. A lot of the roles I play are uptight moms who aren’t really relating to their daughters as much as they want their daughters to live a certain way. This was more a partnership than me living through my daughter, which is how a lot of my characters have been lately.

Q: Which of your TV roles has been your favorite so far?

Susan Walters: One of my favorites was the mom on Point Pleasant. It was only on in the States for six episodes, but we shot 13, and she was somebody who was going through a lot and she had emotional problems. It was easy for me to put it out there that sometimes people look like they have it together have a lot of pain and a lot of problems.

Susan Walters: I went through a lot of things when I was younger, and people look at me and go oh, you don’t look like that would have happened to you. So my favorite parts are usually when you have a different inside and a different life experience than what people think you’re about by looking at you from the outside.

Q: What comes next for Susan Walters after Murdered at 17?

Susan Walters: I did another movie for Jake Helgren. He directed me in Winter Wedding, which I loved and I thought it was so much fun. Those are the other types I like to play. A sassy woman who is all into herself and it was kind of a rom-com, [the] mother of the bride trying to be all involved.

Susan Walters: I just worked with him again on a thriller and I just loved it. It’s called Do Not Be Deceived, and it will be coming out at some point. Jake gets people and has such depth. And as an actress in her 50s and doing this for 30 years, what is so great is he can direct me and make things so fresh. He’s a really fun person to work with.
