Growing up, Susan—whose father was a journalist—wanted to sing and spent seven years studying music.
Nonetheless, she moved to Edinburgh University to study English literature after being rejected from music college.
She quit university and began working as a news reporter in Dundee before transferring to BBC Radio Aberdeen.
She later relocated to London and worked as a documentary narrator there before going back to radio.
The reception to her voice on Radio 4 was very unfavorable, and some listeners thought the BBC’s dedication to precise pronunciation was waning.
She claimed to still have some of the insulting letters she got at the time during an interview with the podcast You’re on Air in 2020.
“You need to tell the narrative gently”, she said. “You are only a vehicle for the narrative itself”.
