Sir Steven Geoffrey Redgrave, CBE, DL (born March 23, 1962) is a former British rower who won gold medals in five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000, as well as a bronze medal in the 1988 Summer Games, giving him a total of six Olympic medals. He has also won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and nine gold medals at the World Rowing Championships. Redgrave is the most successful male rower in Olympic history, with five gold medals and one bronze, and his achievement of being the only Olympian to win gold medals in five different Olympic Games in an endurance sport has led to him being hailed as Britain’s greatest-ever Olympian. In 2002, Redgrave was ranked 36th in the BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.
He was the first British athlete to win five Olympic gold medals, a record that Chris Hoy at the 2012 Summer Olympics could match, and he is the third most decorated British Olympian with six medals, behind Hoy’s seven and cyclist Bradley Wiggins’ seven. On two occasions, he has carried the British flag during the Olympic Games’ opening ceremonies. The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Redgrave in 2011.
