Steve Kinch is the current bassist for the British band, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, an English rock band formed by South African musician Manfred Mann.
Background
Kinch started playing guitar at the age of 12 when his parents bought him a guitar for Christmas.
At the age of 14, he started playing in local bands doing a few odd gigs for the ‘Girl Guides,’ playing pass the parcel. He left school at 16 to become a glassblower. After working for four or five years he decided to playing the bass guitar.
In 1980, he joined Hazel O’Connor’s band and got a chance to tour the U.K., Europe, and America. In 1984 Kinch joined ‘The Jim Capaldi Band’.
A few months later, Kinch’s friend told him about Manfred Mann’s Earth Band looking for a bass player. Kinch was able to find out which songs they were auditioning with. Kinch impressed the band and in 1986, he played as a session player on the band’s Criminal Tango album. He joined the band as a permanent member in 1991.
