Steve Irwin was born in 1962 in Melbourne, Victoria, but he spent part of his late childhood in Queensland where he settled with his parents in 1970. His father was the founder of Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, a small conservation park where young Steve lived among crocodiles and other reptiles. His herpetologist father initiated him in the handling of crocodiles at the early age of nine. Irwin took over his parents´ park in 1991 and renamed it Australia Zoo in 1992. It was during a visit to the zoo that he met his wife Terri Raines, an American naturalist. When interviewed, they say it was love at first sight. Terri describes her sight of Steve as a one-of-a-kind man, an environmental Tarzan. They had two kids, Bindi Sue and Robert Clarence. Steve gained popular acclaim after the release of his popular show “The Crocodile Hunter” whose first episode, released in Australia in 1996, was produced from film footage of Steve’ and Terri´s honeymoon. The show came to America the following year. Steve starred in other shows related to the animals and the environment. His charisma, deep Australian accent, communication skills and ability to show the natural world in an exciting way earned him worldwide popularity. Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary for his daughter’s show, “Bindi the Jungle Girl” on September 4, 2006, at age 44.
