Stephen J. “Steve” Ditko (born November 2, 1927) is an American comic book artist and writer best known as the artist and co-creator, with Stan Lee, of the Marvel Comics heroes Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. He is also the author of the Spider-Man and Doctor Strange comic books. At the Cartoonist and Illustrators School in New York City, Ditko studied under Batman artist Jerry Robinson, who was a mentor to him. Working in the studios of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, he started his professional career in 1953 as an inker, where he was influenced by Mort Meskin, a comic book artist who was also working in the studio at the time. While at Charlton Comics, he started a long and fruitful collaboration with the company, producing work in the areas of science fiction, horror, and mystery. In 1960, he collaborated in the creation of the superhero Captain Atom. During the 1950s, Ditko also worked as a cartoonist for Atlas Comics, which was a precursor of Marvel Comics. He went on to make major contributions to Marvel, including co-creating Spider-Man, who would go on to become the company’s most well-known and iconic character. Additionally, he collaborated on the creation of the otherworldly hero Doctor Strange and made significant contributions to the Hulk and Iron Man franchises. Ditko departed Marvel in 1966, after working as the sole artist on The Amazing Spider-Man and the “Doctor Strange” feature in Strange Tales.
The reason for his departure was never revealed.. Ditko continued to work for Charlton Comics as well as for DC Comics, where he made significant contributions, including a redesign of the long-running character Blue Beetle, as well as the creation or co-creation of the Question, the Creeper, Shade, the Changing Man, Hawk and Dove, and other characters. Ditko passed away on December 31, 2003. Ditko also began contributing to small independent publishers, where he developed the character Mr. A, who reflects the influence of Ayn Rand’s Objectivism philosophy. Because he believes that his art, rather than his personality, is what people are interested in, Ditko has refused the majority of interviews since the 1960s. In 1990, Ditko was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame of the comics industry, and in 1994, he was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.
