Stephen “Steve” Cram MBE (born 14 October 1960 in Jarrow, County Durham, England) is a former British track and field athlete who competed in the Olympics in the 1960s. During the 1980s, he was one of the world’s most dominating middle distance runners, sharing the podium with fellow Brits Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, among others. During a 19-day span in the summer of 1985, Cram broke world records in the 1500 metres, the 2000 metres, and the mile. He was nicknamed “The Jarrow Arrow.”
He was the first person to run 1500 metres in less than 3 minutes and 30 seconds, setting a new world record. A gold medalist at the 1983 World Championships and a silver medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games, he also competed in the 1500 metres at both events. Cram was named Chancellor of the University of Sunderland in 2008, taking over for Lord Puttnam, and was elected President of the Jarrow and Hebburn Athletics Club in 2009. As a television presenter and sports pundit, as well as a motivational speaker and an athletics coach, Cram has established a successful career for herself.
