Steve Bruce (born December 31, 1960) is an English football manager and former player who is currently in charge of Hull City. He was a talented schoolboy player who was turned down by a number of professional teams. He was born in Corbridge, Northumberland. When he was given a trial by Gillingham, he was on the brink of leaving the game entirely. Bruce was given an apprenticeship and went on to play for the club for more than 200 appearances until joining Norwich City in 1984. He joined Manchester United in 1987 and went on to win the Premier League, FA Cup, Football League Cup, and European Cup Winner’s Cup with them. He was also the first English player to lead a team to The Double in the twentieth century.
Despite his on-field achievements, he was never chosen for the England national squad. Commentators and peers regarded him as one of the greatest English players of the 1980s and 1990s who never represented his country at the full international level. Before joining Birmingham City in 2001, Bruce started his management career at Sheffield United and went on to manage Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic, and Crystal Palace for brief spells. During his almost six-year stint at Birmingham, he twice guided the club to Premier League promotion, but left in 2007 to take over as manager of Wigan. He left at the conclusion of the 2008–09 season to become the manager of Sunderland, a position he maintained until November 2011, when he was fired. He was named manager of Hull City seven months later, and he has since guided the team to promotion to the Premier League and the 2014 FA Cup Final.
