Dale Winton dead: Steve Allen opens up in emotional tribute ‘I’m happy for him’
Updated on: Thu, Apr 19, 2018
Dale Winton’s close friend and radio host Steve Allen couldn’t hold back his emotions as he presented on LBC today, just the morning after the death of the TV presenter was announced. It was announced yesterday evening that Dale had died at the age of 62, although it is not yet known how he died. Tributes have been pouring in from famous faces who knew the star, including Graham Norton, David Walliams and the Good Morning Britain team. Steve, 64, met Dale when he was a teenager as the pair worked at a radio station, and this morning the DJ paid tribute to his friend.
The pair were close friends as well as colleagues and even went on holiday and lived together briefly.
Steve tweeted earlier today: “What a strange way to start Thursday, can’t quite get my head around the news of Dale’s death, so many messages, thank you all.”
He opened his radio show by addressing the death, he said: “I was as shocked as everybody else to hear the news that Dale had passed on.
“Strangely enough, we were only talking about it a while ago, he didn’t like the ageing process, he hated it.
“He used to say to me ‘I’ve had enough’. And I used to say ‘Oh, you’ve got loads of things’. Just when you think someone’s got everything, deep down inside, maybe they don’t have everything.”
Steve then became overwhelmed as he teared up when he told of the condolences he had received.
He said: “I’ve been inundated with texts and emails and all sorts of lovely people I’ve not heard from in ages, saying they’re very sorry. Everybody’s very sorry.
“I’m actually quite happy for him. I know that sounds quite bizarre and I should explain why.
“Occasionally, if I sound a bit teary, just go with it. It sounds so stupid.
“You know when you know somebody for such a long time, nearly 50 years. I feel better for him now, I don’t think he’d been in a good place for a long long time. He would be so thrilled at the coverage.
“I feel happy for him that he’s in a place now where he’s probably going to be eternally young. He won’t age anymore.
“He had medical problems, he had emotional problems, he had insecurities.
“Everyone’s got them, but when you’re in the business, they’re amplified.”
Steve later added: “If it hadn’t been for him, I don’t think I’d be doing radio.
“I met him when we were 18. He was a rather large chap, 23 or 24 stone, with hair down to his shoulders and we just hit it off straight away.
“Yesterday, when I went to bed, I knew Dale Winton. Today, Dale Winton is no more and I can’t come to terms with that.
“I spent most of this morning’s show crying. It’s really bizarre.”
