Stephen Sommers The Mummy
The Mummy was a 1999 American film that was written and directed by Stephen Sommers. It was a remake of the 1932 film of the same name with stars Brendan Fraser, Arnold Vosloo, John Hannah, and Kevin J. O’Connor, and Rachel Weisz in the title role as the reanimated mummy.
The film followed adventurer Rick O’Connell as he traveled to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with a librarian and her older brother, where they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers. The development of the film took years, with multiple screenplays and directors attached.
Stephen Sommers successfully pitched his version of a more adventurous and romantic take on the source material in 1997. Principal photography took place in Morocco and the United Kingdom; the crew endured dehydration, sandstorms, and snakes shooting on location in the Sahara desert.
Industrial Light & Magic provided many of the visual effects, blending live-action footage and computer-generated imagery to create the titular monster. Jerry Goldsmith provided the orchestral score. The Mummy was theatrically released on May 7, 1999. Inspite of mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success and grossed over $416.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $80 million.
The film’s success spawned two direct sequels, The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). It also led to spinoffs such as an animated series and the prequel The Scorpion King (2002), which generated its own sequels.
Stephen Sommers Van Helsing (film)
Van Helsing was a 2004 action gothic horror film that was written and directed by Sommers. It starred Hugh Jackman as monster hunter Van Helsing, and Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious. The film was a homage and tribute to the Universal Horror Monster films from the 1930s and 1940s (also produced by Universal Studios which were in turn partially based on novels by Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley), of which Sommers was a fan.
The eponymous character was inspired by the Dutch vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing from Irish author Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the film includes a number of monsters such as Count Dracula (and other vampires), Frankenstein’s monster, Duergar, Mr. Hyde, and werewolves in a way similar to the multi-monster movies that Universal produced in the 1940s, such as Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula. Despite mostly negative reviews, the film grossed over $300 million worldwide.
