Stephen Hendry Biography

Stephen Hendry (Full name: Stephen Gordon Hendry MBE)is a Scottish former professional snooker player and commentator for the BBC and ITV.

Widely referred to as one of the greatest snooker players ever, he is best known for dominating the sport in the 1990s, when he won the World Championship seven times, a record in the modern era.

His first world title in 1990, at the age of 21, made him the youngest ever world champion, a record he still holds. He was positioned world number one for eight consecutive seasons between (1990 and 1998) and regained the number one ranking in 2007. He and Ronnie O’Sullivan jointly hold the record for the most ranking titles in the sport, with 36 each.

He also won six Masters titles (including five consecutively), five UK Championship titles, and the 1987 World Doubles Championship (with Mike Hallett). His 18 Triple Crown tournament wins is surpassed only by Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 19. One of only three players to have won all three Triple Crown events in a single season, Hendry is the only player to have achieved the feat twice, in the (1989/1990 and 1995/1996) seasons. A prolific break-builder, he recorded the second-highest total of career century breaks. He made 11 competitive maximum breaks, second only to O’Sullivan’s 15.

The commentator was awarded an MBE in 1994 and voted BBC Scotland’s Sports Personality of the Year in 1987 and 1996. In May 2012, after featuring in his 27th consecutive World Championship, he announced his retirement from the game, bringing to an end his record 23 consecutive seasons in the top 16 of the world rankings.

Ronnie O’Sullivan EQUALS stunning Stephen Hendry record after Tour Championship glory
RONNIE O’SULLIVAN has written himself further into snooker history by equalling Stephen Hendry’s record number of ranking titles.

O’Sullivan finished off a brilliant March by beating Neil Robertson (13-11) at Venue Cymru in Wales to win the Tour Championship and claim his 36th tournament crown.

Rocket managed to duplicate his win over the ‘Thunder from Down Under’, much like he did in the Players Championship, but the Australian was a much trickier customer tonight.

In that previous final, O’Sullivan breezed past Robertson in a (10-4) victory but the Melbourne-born potter put up a hefty fight before falling at the last hurdle.

He said: “It is the different emotions he gives out. In the last two or three frames, he is verging on boredom out there.”

But O’Sullivan prevailed in the evening session, never letting the lead out of his sight.

The pair tussled and toiled with one another, with the scores tied at (10-10) at one point.

But the strength of O’Sullivan prevailed in the end, winning three of the last four frames to claim the title.

And in the process, the 43-year-old has now won 36 ranking titles – equalling fellow legend Hendry’s record.

The Scotsman won the last of his titles in 2005, enjoyed his best success in the game during the 90s before retiring in 2012.

However, O’Sullivan does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon as he looks to make the record his own.

The Wordsley-born ace revealed on Twitter that he intends to keep going.

“Enjoyed a couple of chill days at the @ElmTreeLlan Llandudno before my matches. They really look after their guests,” he wrote.

“Superb service and great rooms with amazing views, can’t wait to come back and visit you all again.”  By Callum Vurley on  25th March 2019

Stephen Hendry Snooker Cue

Hendry’s prime cue is broken in-flight Seven-times World Champion’s cue broken by baggage handlers

The cue with which Stephen Hendry won his seven world titles has been broken by airline baggage handlers. It gives Hendry a dilemma. Changing cues can be an ordeal for the top players because no two are the same.

Players can only insure their cues for face value, which is usually no more than £40. Increased airline security since September 11 has stopped players taking their cue cases into aircraft cabins. Hendry, 34, discovered the breakage on his return to Heathrow from tournaments in Hong Kong and Bangkok and now hopes that his cue doctor, Lawrie Annandale, can repair the damage. The season’s first world ranking tournament, the LG Cup, is only five weeks away.

“The bottom 15 inches is broken off but the shaft is still intact,” said Annandale. “I’m going to fix another butt. Stephen seems calm, but is obviously very worried and only Stephen will know if the cue plays exactly the same.”

He had used the cue – a gift from his parents when he was a child – throughout his professional career. He nearly lost it in 1990 when it was stolen during the Rothmans Grand Prix. It was, however, returned when a reward of £10,000 was offered. Adapted from Clive Everton, 2/03/2003 update.

The greatest comebacks in the history of the sport

Stephen Hendry v Jimmy White, World Snooker Championship final, 1992

The “people’s champion” Jimmy White famously never became world champion despite making it to six finals in the 1980s and 90s.

After storming to a 14-8 lead in 1992, White needed just four more frames to beat him before the Scot won 10 successive frames to win 14-18.
