Stephanie Szostak A Million Little Things

A Million Little Things trails a group of friends who become detached when Jon, the group’s de facto leader, dies by suicide. They didn’t know he was depressed; they don’t know why he chose to kill himself, and they are struggling to deal with Jon’s death in the wake of their own personal crises.

Szostak plays Delilah, Jon’s widow, who needs to stay strong in front of her children and the rest of the group. Her role as Delilah on A Million Little Things seems far more personal, this is because it taps into her feelings about her own friend group.

“When I read the pilot, it really made me think of my group of friends, and I loved that it was very relatable characters with real stories. And I loved that it made me laugh in the best possible way,” she says. “It reminded me of my own life when there’s…. when everything comes crashing down and you have these people in your life that make you laugh when you want to cry.”

The subject matter is tough, but as Szostak says, the show does everything it can to portray the hard times in its characters’ lives in a realistic way. “The writers are working with consultants to make sure that anything regarding depression or suicide or cancer is addressed in a very truthful way and as a sensitive matter,” she says.

“It is very high drama, but just as in life, but when we deal — and we all do — with things that really rock our world to the core, we can’t sustain the pain constantly… It’s just like in life — these people are in this state, but they have to keep moving.”

And move forward, they do, but it’s not easy, seeing as Jon’s death brings up a lot of issues that each member of the group has tried to hide from the rest. Szostak maintains that though all the characters are “flawed,” that’s what makes the world go ‘round.

“Certainly, all the shows that I like to watch… it’s just good drama! Seeing people make mistakes and watching them try to work it out the best they can,” she says. “Nobody is perfect in the show, so hopefully people will relate to that and not judge them.”

In Marvel Comics, Brandt fell in love and married a scientist named Ted Sallis, who became a Man-Thing, after injecting himself with a serum he was working on for S.H.I.E.L.D.
The reason Sallis injects himself in the books has to do with A.I.M. sending an agent to infiltrate the project, an agent who happens to fall in love with Ellen Brandt, resulting in her also enlisting in A.I.M. It’s her actions that resulted in Sallis becoming Man-Thing.

Stephanie Szostak Dinner For Schmucks|Interview

Dinner For Schmucks is based on a French film, about the worst guy to ever be invited to somebody’s weekly dinner party. Szostak stars as Paul Rudd’s girlfriend Julie, who’s horrified having agreed to take someone to supper to ridicule.

This what Szostak had to say in an interview about the movie;

Your “Schmucks” character works for an artist named Kieran (Jemaine Clement), who paints portraits of himself on animal bodies. Who are your favorite artists?

S: I love Gustav Klimt and I love Egon Schiele. I kind of like a dark art. So Kieran’s art was good to look at because you had to find, “Okay, what do I like about this?” I thought they did an amazing job because it was completely outrageous, but in a way, it was quite realistic. I did some research on the Internet about this crazy art and there’s a lot out there that’s crazy similar.

What’s Steve Carell, who plays the “schmuck,” like on the set?

S: He’s pretty tame, and then the minute the cameras start rolling, the show begins. This scene where Julie comes out of the elevator and Barry, Carell’s character thinks she’s someone else – when we were doing my reaction shot to Tim, Rudd having sex with someone else – he just came up with crazy, crazy things. He was just giving me a wide choice of things to react to. And I was just like, in total shock. I cracked up and said, “I can’t believe you said that!” And he’s like, “Huh? What?”

What did you do before becoming an actress?

S: I studied business in school, so I worked for Chanel in marketing. And I also worked part-time in an office. So I had office jobs. And then I realized I needed to get the hell out of there, just realizing there was no fulfillment.

Why’d you moved to New York after college as opposed to L.A. or France?

S: I remember passing through New York in college and thinking, I’m going to come back here. The energy just made me think of Europe – everyone walking, seeing the delis and flowers outside. It just felt very familiar. I loved it right away.
