Later, he realized while studying theater at Marquette University that he enjoyed making props more than acting and wasn’t willing to put in the effort required to be a successful actor. He eventually dropped out of college and worked as a technician in many children’s museums.
He landed a job as a props carpenter at a St. Louis theater through coincidental circumstances, followed by a comparable position at Houston’s Alley Theatre.
After receiving his union card, Coakley began working at the Imperial and then the Lyric Theatre, honing his skills with the help of a props master who later served as his mentor.
Joshua’s most memorable performance was the Imperial Theatre production of Billie Elliot, which was his first Broadway production and featured his wife in the cast. In 2017, Hudson hired him, and he became its youngest employee.
