Former Novato Mayor Makes Emotional Trip With Dwindling Number of World War 2 Veterans

kcbsradio.radio.com — NOVATO (KCBS Radio) — Jim Henderson has seen a lot in his lifetime. He’s 95 years old, and the recipient of a Silver Star for valor in combat during World War 2. But the former Novato city councilman and the mayor is still touched by the respect shown to members of “the greatest generation”.11 MONTHS AGO Open in Who Shared Wrong byline?

The Bee and Me

kcbs.radio.com — There’s an old axiom in baseball: “Come to the ballpark every day and you’ll see something you’ve never seen before. “Maybe it’s time to apply that school of thought to the world of spelling bees.I know.

It happened to me. On live television., I’m not quite sure how I got here, but somehow I’ve become “The Pronouncer For Life” for the annual Bay Area Spelling Bee. I honestly don’t know how many of these I’ve done.2 YEARS AGO Open in Who Shared Wrong byline?

Even More Questions Than Usual

kcbs.radio.com — In a long-ago but memorable “Saturday Night Live” segment, the late comedia Gilda Radner–in her “Roseanne Roseannadanna” persona–told a mythical viewer, “You sure ask a lot of questions.

“That pretty well describes my longtime KCBS Radio partner Susan Leigh Taylor and me. We’re coming up on 18 years of working together. On an average day, we’ll do 5 live interviews. Do the math: that’s a lot of interviews and yes, a lot of questions.

Stan Bunger KCBS

Bunger and colleague Steve Bitker host the regular “KCBS Sports Fans” podcast. Bunger was named to the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2010. He first joined KCBS in 1982 and served until 1992; his current tenure began in 2000.

Stan Bunger and Susan Leigh Taylor — the duo that brings you all of the other news in between the “traffic and weather together” on KCBS radio — are seen here in a 2014 profile about their highly-rated morning drive coverage.

They’re famous in the Bay Area but you probably don’t recognize them. Meet the faces of local radio.

What’s it like to have a household name in the San Francisco with a face that almost nobody walking down Market Street would recognize?

That’s the situation for many of the people on your favorite podcast or for the voices on your radio alarm clock. You’ve heard Chuy Gomez or Patti Reising on the air for decades, but let’s be honest, you have no idea what they look like.

KCBS anchor Stan Bunger is one of the best-known voices in the Bay Area, but that doesn’t mean he’s gets approached at every coffee stop he makes in Alameda.

“It doesn’t happen every day, but it DOES happen. It usually catches me off-guard, because people often just ‘pick up the conversation,’ following up on something we had on the air, and it takes me a minute to realize what they’re talking about.” Bunger told SFGATE via email.

“Two things usually happen: first, I am embarrassed because I think it’s somebody I’ve already met and I’ve forgotten their name. Second, I start worrying about anything I might have said within their earshot that might come back to haunt me,” Bunger said.

Bunger says, at this point in his career, he’s done enough TV and had his headshot posted to the internet so many times that he rarely gets comments about how he looks compared to what his listeners expected from the voice they’ve lived with for years. But that wasn’t always the case.

“Many years ago… I was the newscaster on the morning show at a station at Lake Tahoe. My ‘bit’ with the DJ revolved around my supposed love of donuts,” recalls Bunger. But once he went out into the real world the bit came back to haunt him.

“I introduced myself to a group of people who refused to believe I was me; in front of them stood a skinny guy and the guy they ‘saw’ on the radio was, well, not skinny. I actually had to pull out my ID to prove myself to them.”

In hopes that our audience will never demand ID from other longtime Bay Area radio personalities, we’ve compiled a collection of photos to help you match the voice – or at least name – to the face in the slideshow above.
