Spencer Haywood Career
Haywood was named Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player for the 1969–70 season, with leading the league in scoring and rebounds. The next year season and Seattle SuperSonics owner Sam Schulman defied NBA rules by completing a contract. Players were denied the chance to sign with or be drafted by any NBA team until four years after their high school graduation (their designated college class graduation year).
He alongside and Schulman filed an antitrust suit, claiming that the NBA’s draft policy was in effect a restriction of trade, hence violating the Sherman Act of 1890. He played for the Sonics while the case worked its way through the courts, with fans frequently booing him and players as well physically threatening him both off and on the court. In 1971, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of him alongside Schulman, paving the way for future players to join the league before finishing—or even beginning—college careers.
He later proved to be one of the NBA’s most dominating forces, averaging a career 9.3 rebounds and 19.2 points per game while playing for Seattle and several other teams. He was named to two All-NBA first teams, played in four NBA All-Star Games, and was a member of the 1979–80 NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. He later began using cocaine, eventually developing a serious habit that led to his dismissal from the Lakers. He later sobered up and played one year in the Italian league before spending two more seasons with the NBA’s Washington Bullets.
He played four decades after Haywood v in 2010. National Basketball Association, the league honored him during its annual All-Star Game. Of the twenty-four players selected as all-stars that year, twenty-one had come into the league as beneficiaries of Haywood’s efforts. He got to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.
Spencer Haywood Nike
Haywood once sued the NBA to gain early entrance into the league after making his NBA debut with the Seattle SuperSonics at age 21, when he was approached by Nike early in his career with an enticing offer: Either $100,000 or 10 percent of the company in exchange for promoting the company’s shoes. Nike was relatively unknown, having launched as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964, only to become Nike Inc. in 1971. So at the advice of his agent, he took the cash rather than partnering with Phil Knight & Co.
The deal worked out well for Nike, as for Haywood, it didn’t turn out as well as it could have for Haywood, whose 10 percent stake in Nike would be worth somewhere around $8.6 billion today.
