Maame Biney is an American short-track speed skater born on January 28, 2000.
At the 2017 World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships, Biney took bronze in the 500 meters.
Later that year, she made her senior team debut, winning the America’s Cup at the United States Speedskating Short Track World Cup Qualifier.
Maame competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, becoming the second African-born athlete to represent the U.S. at the Winter Olympics.

Maame Biney was born to her parents, Kweku Biney and Gina, in Accra, Ghana.
Kweku works in a maintenance company in Virginia, and Gina runs a Salon in Ghana.
She moved to the United States with her father when she was five years old. Biney started skating at the age of six in Northern Virginia.
She began figure skating but switched to speed skating on a coach’s recommendation.
Mama’s parents are now separated, and her mother, Gina, presently resides in Ghana.
The 22 years old athlete misses her mother, but she is still grateful for her father’s sacrifice.
Biney says her father is her colossal support system, and she started skating after her father saw a sign that said: “Learn to Skate.”
It is speculated that Kweku moved to Maryland about 1985 and claimed to have married Biney’s mother there, but she eventually moved back to Ghana, where Biney was born in 2000.
