Sourav grew up amid opulence because his father was one of the city’s wealthiest men. When he first started playing cricket, he was interested in football and didn’t have any support.

His brother Snehasish, a cricketer for the Bengal team, finally assisted him in pursuing a cricketing career; he joined a cricket academy and went on to captain the cricket team at St Xavier’s School. During this time, he had a number of problems, with teammates accusing him of refusing to execute basic duties that were beyond his social level. Despite this, he debuted for Bengal in first-class cricket in 1989.

His demeanour would lead to his dismissal from the team. He then played domestic cricket before being called up to the national team in 1996, where he made his Test debut against England, becoming only the third batsman to achieve a century on debut at Lord’s Cricket Ground. He then went on to make another century in the second test, becoming only the third player in test history to do so in his first two innings. Over the next few years, he proceeded to win honours, scoring his first ODI century in 1997 and receiving the Man of the Match award at the 1998 Independence Cup final in Dhaka. He was also a member of the Indian World Cup team in 1999, and his 183 was the second highest score in World Cup history.

Sourav was selected captain of the Indian cricket team in 2000, and he guided India to victory against South Africa. They made it to the finals of the ICC Knock Out Trophy in 2000, and he scored a century in the final. For the first time since 1983, India reached the World Cup Final in 2003, but were defeated by Australia. The next year, despite being India’s most successful cricket captain, he was sacked from the team due to poor form in 2005.

He had a successful Test comeback in 2006 and was recalled to the ODI team, including for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, however they were eliminated during the group stage. He hit his first double century in 2007, and he continued to play well throughout the year. He was named captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League the following year (IPL). He was also being touted as a possible contender for CAB President after announcing that his Test series against Australia in 2008 would be his final, during which he achieved his final test century. He went on to become the head of the Cricket Development Committee of the CAB, yet he continued to play in the IPL and the Ranji Cup before retiring in 2012.
