In the American single-camera comedy series ‘Twenties,’ Sophina Brown plays Ida B. Hattie (Jonica T. Gibbs), a queer black woman in her twenties, and her two straight best friends, Marie (Christina Elmore) and Nia (Gabrielle Graham), struggle to find their footing in life, marriage, and the professional world in Los Angeles in this scripted comedy series.
Lena Waithe produced the series when she was in her twenties, based on her first impressions of Los Angeles. She claimed that she purposely produced a series featuring a “masculine-presenting stud” with straight friends because she had been through the same thing.
Susan Fales-Hill was asked by Waithe to assist her in producing the series, which was originally scheduled to be produced by BET, then landed on Hulu before being picked up by BET again. It’s the first program on the network to feature a queer protagonist.
Twenties, a new eight-episode comedy series written by Lena Waithe, was ordered by BET on April 15, 2019. Waithe and Fales-Hill are co-showrunners. Rishi Rajani and Andrew Coles are also executive producers on the film. Justin Tipping is the pilot’s director and co-executive producer.
Waithe said that BET didn’t send her any notes while filming Twenties and was respectful of the producers’ artistic vision.
