The Afar are an African tribe that reside mostly in the Horn of Africa. They are also called the Danakil and Adal ethnic groups. The Afar region stretches across Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea. The Afar tribe consists of nomads who speak the Afar language. They live in independent small kingdoms, each ruled by its own sultan.
The Afar are considered to be the toughest people in the world. For ages they have lived in a place called the Magma Chamber. This is a part of the world that is super hot and experiences volcanic eruptions all the time. There is an accidental tendency that the country could openly split at the site at any time. Yet these African people lived there, survived and are still surviving.
To their salvation, however, are the salt deposits of receding lakes in the Afar region. The salt helps keep volcanic eruptions at bay. Even then, there’s a chance the salt will eventually wear off. Bearing this in mind, these proud African people insist on residing in this rugged place that they have accepted as their home. Whether there is an earthquake sooner or later, the Afar tribe does not move.
It is believed that the Afar existed from the 13th century. Her traditional hairstyle is very unique – the Dayta hairstyle. The hairstyle is styled and cared for with a butter application. The Afar tribe is rooted in the cultural heritage of Afro-Asian Muslims.
In Ethiopia, for example, they number approximately 1,276,867 people, of which 105,551 are urban residents. With climate change, the Afar herdsmen face several sensitive challenges. In Djibouti, too, they face a scorching environment and drought. Consequently they lose some livestock.
women from afar
Despite being among the poorest in the world and among the most fragile regions, Afar women look incredibly phenomenal. They are beautiful and most of them are dark skinned with stunningly long black hair which they maintain simply by braiding it in straight lines. Married Afar women wear hair scarves to cover their hair, but singles are allowed to display their braids.
The women make no effort to glam up, however, the skins have this fantastic natural glow that can be easily noticed. Being fundamentally Muslim, Afar women do not dress nervously. While some of them have bare breasts (which we do not consider typical of Muslims), with collar neckpieces as adornment and to show their wealth, most of them cover their entire bodies leaving only their faces exposed to the world.
At first glance, the women look fragile, but surprisingly, given the harsh conditions they must survive in, they are among the strongest in the world.
First they have to endure the harsh weather conditions without a roof over their heads to protect them from the harshness of the sun. This is because they live in oval camps, usually like roamers. The camps are laid out with horn barricades to keep out wild animals and rival tribes or the enemy. The huts, also called Ari, are built with palm mats.
On the other hand, the women also have the task of setting up the camps, which they can easily lead on camels during the move.
In addition, Afar women are the ones in charge of milking the goats and making liquid butter from the animals. Apart from that, Afar women run the houses and are the musicians of the tribe.
The frightening thing is that these women also have to endure beatings from their husbands. A man from afar might flog his wife in the first place for losing a goat or for not finishing dinner before he gets home. Unfortunately, in the Afar tradition, no one should interfere when a husband beats his wife for doing something wrong.
food from afar
People here have to make some strenuous efforts to access sustainable food due to environmental concerns. Likewise, obtaining drinking water is a challenge as they do not have painless access to clean water. However, meat and milk are a staple of the Afar. They also use milk as a key ingredient in entertaining guests. If you give a guest a cup of warm milk, the guest will be safe in your home, since the milk implies that the host will protect him immediately. If the person is killed in the host’s house, their death is avenged as if they were a member of the family.
Distant traditions, culture
Afar, people prefer to marry their first cousins, as is the custom among Semites. But they follow father’s clan instead of mother’s clan. Despite the close relationship in marriage, divorce rates remain high.
Another strange tradition is the suturing of the female vulva (infibulation). This type of circumcision is also practiced in some parts of the Bantu and Cushite communities. In the same way, boys go through the process of being able to control their sexual urges.
Also, Afar people use camels as their basic mode of transportation but rarely ride them. Instead, they prefer to use them to carry their loads.
distant challenges
Facing the challenges of this tribe will stand almost forever for its massive scope. As previously mentioned, the majority of Afar men are typically pastoralists, raising sheep, cows and goats in the desert, while others mine and sell salt in neighboring towns. Some of them who live near the Red Sea mainly live from fishing. This is an indication of the little if any development and education they have seen to date.
Women from afar are more vulnerable to related women’s health issues compared to some other communities. In general, people face an ongoing risk of severe drought or flooding with increasing presence of infectious diseases such as HIV.
The government tried to get the population to settle in one place is far from it, but in this enterprise it did not bring success. While some still live in the Aussa Oasis, some have gained access to modern economies. Those who have chosen modern ways of life are doing their best to instill a basic consciousness in the community. However, we feel that more should be done to keep them updated.
