At the age of 90, James Hardy, a well-known winemaker, sailor, and community figure, quietly passed away in Adelaide. Hardy took part in three America’s Cup campaigns for Australia, helping Australia II to a historic victory in 1983. He was a distinguished member of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.

In addition to his sailing achievements, he also competed for Australia in the Olympics in 1964 and 1968. In recognition of his contributions to sailing and the community, Hardy was awarded an OBE in 1975 and a knighthood in 1981. Even in his old years, he kept sailing as a sport.

Along with his sailing career, he continued to hold managerial positions in the winemaking business owned by his family and served on many boards and councils, including the Landcare Foundation.

David and Richard, as well as David and Pamela, were Hardy’s sons, in addition to his wife Joan and siblings. Adelaide will have a private funeral prior to a later memorial service.
