Sigrid Thornton Interview During An Emotional Episode With Anh’s Brush With Fame

‘It’s still quite raw’: Sigrid Thornton reveals family pain

She is one of Australia’s most famous actors but Sigrid Thornton has kept her family’s pain out of the spotlight until now.

The SeaChange star was brought to tears as she recounted her father Neil Thornton’s long battle with illness before his 2014 death on Tuesday’s episode of Anh’s Brush With Fame.

The actress told artist Anh Do how Neil had enlisted in the Australian Army and in 1945 was sent to Japan as part of a clean-up force following the atomic bomb being dropped.

It was there Sigrid’s father was exposed to heavy radiation and later diagnosed with neurasthenia.

“We had to do a lot of research into what happened to Dad later in his life because he developed a very serious chronic pain condition and — I’m sorry,” Sigrid said, pausing as tears welled in her eyes.

“It really marred the last years of his life, the last 10 years … it’s still quite raw. He spent the last 10 years of his life in chronic pain as a result of this, clearly as a result of this early radiation exposure.”

Despite his suffering, Sigrid said her “extremely kind and gentle” father had a “very good death” surrounded by family.

“I say that because Dad had a very long illness, so there was a lot of pre-grieving that had gone on for him because he was very, very, sick for a long time,” she explained.

“But when he finally died he started to die on Christmas Day — matter of fact he waited until the family was gathered together … it took him two days to finally die.

“But because it took two days to die, and because the whole family was assembled, we could shower him with love in those final hours. And it was a great privilege to have that time with Dad.”

During the wide ranging chat Sigrid also revealed she was made to audition four times before she was cast as Laura Gibson in SeaChange.

“I think I might have just worn them down!” Sigrid joked. “They might have just said, ‘get this person out of here and just give her the bloody job for God’s sake,’ something like that must have happened.

“But I loved the material so much, I loved the tone and I loved the character very much, and what ensued was a very joyful part of my life actually.”

But Sigrid’s confession paled in comparison to Anh Do’s revelation — he had a role on SeaChange playing “some sort of dodgy boyfriend for about two minutes”.

“I can’t believe I am going to tell you this because I was very bad in it, but my first acting role ever in my whole life was in SeaChange,” Anh revealed.
