Should you cover conure cage at night

Birds are pretty sensitive to light and will not sleep whenever they see hints that would tell them to stay awake. As such, you would need to cover the cage to simulate total darkness and to allow it to fix its sleeping pattern so that it would stay in line with your time zone.

The sleep cage should be put in a room that’s completely dark and quiet, where the bird is not going to be disturbed—such as a spare bedroom, laundry room or even a large walk-in closet.

Pet birds should always be brought inside at night, especially if they are on their own. Nevertheless, most parrots are afraid of the dark due to their vision. Since parrots have a difficult time seeing at night, they have a hard time getting used to their surroundings and overreacting by being scared.

I have seen this sleeping behavior in other related conures, lovebirds and occasionally other species. With the conures, it is possibly related to their natural habitat and where they sleep at night in the wild.

Signs Of Illness In Birds

Sleeping Too Much A change in your bird’s sleeping habits can indicate illness, especially if the bird is sleeping on two feet with his feathers fluffed up to keep warm. Sometimes an ill bird will crouch on the bottom of the cage.

Need for Darkness

As a pet, parrots require more sleep than we do, and most continue to need at least 10 hours of sleep time every night. Lights and activity will keep a bird awake since its instincts are to stay awake during this time when predators may be present.

Of the five senses, a parrot’s eyesight is his most acute sense. He will see all the same colors humans see, but with greater vividness and a more stark differentiation between similar colors.
