Hughes’s mother passed away from breast cancer in her 40s. Her mother had a mastectomy, and then one day a year later she said she didn’t feel well.
“Hughes’s mother went to the hospital, and three days later, her mother passed,” Hughes said. “It was destructive to me and my siblings.”
Since then, she has taken her health very seriously. Hughes runs, swims, lifts weights, eats organic foods, doesn’t snack and has cut red meat from her diet.

“I do all the things that people go trying to stay healthy,” Hughes said, “and I still have cancer. But cancer doesn’t have me.”

The mass in Hughes’s right breast is the size of a small grain of rice. A breast test could not detect the tumor. A mammogram did not see anything or 3D imaging.
She sees her OBGYN every year, and nothing has ever been wrong. Hughes tests always come back negative, and she feels and looks healthy year after year.
Last June, she asked her doctor what her next steps were; if there was new technology or a new test that she could take to be proactive as a high-risk patient.
Hughes’s doctor told her about a breast MRI, an imaging technique that is far from mainstream but can detect things that mammograms can’t. She expressed interest and her doctor made a few calls.
The breast MRI was timetabled for the next year’s checkup.
On Friday, the month of July 19, she went to UC Health for her test. The breast MRI was unlike any other exam Hughes had taken before.
“They scan you all kinds of different ways,” Hughes said. They move you around like you are on an amusement park ride.
After it was over, she went about her day as usual. Hughes got a call from her OBGYN just a few hours after the MRI when she was sitting in a Sam’s Club parking lot. They went back and forth chatting for a bit – Hughes had become friendly with Hughes’s doctor by that point.
“Hey, I had that test today,” Hughes said to her doctor over the phone.
I know, Hughes’s doctor replied.
Afterward, Hughes’ voice lowered: What?
She needed to go in for more tests. And then biopsies. And more tests.
Hughes called her friends and family. Hughes’s girlfriends told her not to worry.
“I had my friends tell me, ‘Oh, I had something similar happen to me, but it was nothing,’” Hughes remembers.
But it was nothing. On Tuesday, the month of July 30, Hughes got another call. It was cancer.
