Miller began his career over three decades ago as a deputy with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and has continuously served with the department since 1985. He was elected in November of 2019 and officially began his term on January 1, 2020.
Miller has served in his community in a wide variety of roles from School Resource Officer (SRO) to Administrative Captain whose responsibilities include managing the Sheriff’s Office budget, Community Services, Courthouse Security and the Civil Unit, to Operations Captain.
Most recently Miller has served as the Divisional Supervisor for the Operational functions of the agency which include supervising daily functions of the Patrol Deputies, Criminal Investigators, Vice Investigators, Gang Investigators, Animal Control Unit, Tactical Team and K-9 units.

Captain Mike Miller with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office responded Friday to accusations that he violated the “Hatch Act.” The act prohibits government employees from certain campaign activities, including abuse of a position to leverage his or her campaign. For Miller, a complaint alleges that he used his authority as Captain to promote his campaign for the Sheriff’s seat by wearing his uniform in billboards, advertisements, and handouts.
The complaint letter sent to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel also confirms the 35-year law enforcement violated the law and that he was advised to comply. Miller acknowledged the violation, saying he has already adjusted his campaign to align with the Hatch Act’s requirements.
“We have learned new stipulations,” Miller said. “There are certain things we can or cannot do, and once we are notified, we adjust accordingly,” Miller said this was his first time running for office or violating the Hatch Act. Miller is running against Tim Hayden and James Kirkland.
