Shelley Smith is a five-time Emmy-winning American reporter working as a sportscaster for ESPN Sports Center reporter. Smith left ESPN in January 1997 after working for the network as a part-time reporter since 1993 and returned to ESPN in April 2015.
She was previously a writer/reporter for Sports Illustrated (1989–1997), Pacific Stars and Stripes in Tokyo, Japan (1982–1984), and The San Francisco Examiner (1984–1987), where she received a 1986 William Randolph Hearst Award for her Title IX series in the Bay Area. Smith served previously for the Associated Press.
Smith is the author of two books: “Just Give Me the Damn Ball!,” written during the 1996 NFL season with the then New York Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson and “Games Girls Play: Strategies to Direct and Understand Young Female Athletes,” written with the sports psychologist Caroline Silby, published in 2000. Smith is the co-founder of the newsletter for the Magic Johnson Foundation, works on numerous boards for San Pedro’s The Boys and Girls Club, and is a volunteer writer for several charities, including the Serra Project, which offers homes for AIDS victims.
