Dawood and his family left their home in London and spent a month traveling to Canada. Shahzada made plans for himself and his son Suleman to board the Titan submersible over Father’s Day weekend. Shahzada is an avid Titanic enthusiast and has a long-standing love for science and exploration.
Their goal was to see the Titanic’s wreckage, which sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. The intended dive would last about eight hours and would take them to a depth of 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). The descent started on June 18, 2023, in the morning.
Unfortunately, the Titan lost contact with the surface ship, the MV Polar Prince, about an hour and a half into the dive. The United States, Canada, and France all provided water and air help for the extensive search and rescue operations.
The United States Coast Guard confirmed the finding of wreckage on June 22, 2023, around 490 meters (1,600 feet) from the Titanic’s bow. The debris was said to be a sign of a catastrophic pressure chamber failure.
All of the passengers on the Titan, including Dawood, his son, Hamish Harding, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and the CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush, were determined to have tragically perished in the tragedy.
