Second Arrest Made in Connection with Threats Aimed At Referee Kevin Clancy Following Celtic v Rangers Clash

In the latest development concerning the alleged threats directed at referee Kevin Clancy after the heated Old Firm match between Celtic and Rangers, a second man has been charged. Police initiated an investigation into the claims made by football authorities, stating that the match official had been targeted following a controversial decision made during the April clash. Reports had previously revealed that Clancy had been subjected to vile messages, causing him distress, following Celtic’s 3-2 victory over their Glasgow derby rivals.

The decision that drew significant criticism involved the disallowing of a goal by Rangers’ striker Alfredo Morelos during the crucial Premiership encounter. Subsequently, the Scottish Football Association (SFA) contacted the authorities three days after the match, resulting in the arrest of Damien Samson, a 25-year-old who confessed to sending abusive emails. Samson, hailing from Tranent, East Lothian, was charged in May after the SFA reported numerous threatening messages.

During the court proceedings at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, it was disclosed that Clancy’s work email address, associated with his legal profession, had been widely circulated online. Sheriff Peter McCormack imposed a fine of £640 on Samson. It is estimated that the referee received hundreds of hateful messages following the match.

In response to the disallowed goal, Rangers submitted a letter to the governing body, seeking clarification regarding Clancy’s decision. As the investigation progressed, law enforcement authorities have now confirmed the arrest of a second individual in connection with the threatening communications. The suspect, a 26-year-old man, has been charged accordingly and is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.

The arrests made in relation to the threats against Kevin Clancy serve as a reminder of the concerning levels of abuse faced by individuals in professional sports. The incident highlights the need for stricter measures to ensure the safety and well-being of referees and officials, both on and off the field. The footballing community continues to grapple with the issue of online harassment and the appropriate actions required to address it effectively.
