Scott Robertson Anticipates Fierce Bledisloe Cup Clash with Schmidt Leading Wallabies

As anticipation builds for the annual Bledisloe Cup clash, All Blacks coach Scott Robertson is expecting a feisty encounter with new Wallabies mentor Joe Schmidt at the helm. Both teams have undergone coaching changes since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, with Robertson taking over from Ian Foster and Schmidt stepping in for Eddie Jones.

While New Zealand narrowly fell short in the World Cup final against South Africa, the Wallabies faced a challenging campaign, failing to progress beyond the pool stage for the first time in their history. Eddie Jones, the former head coach, paid the price for the disappointing performance, and Schmidt, with his wealth of experience, has been entrusted with steering Australia back to success.

Speaking about Schmidt’s appointment, Robertson expressed confidence in the veteran coach, describing him as the right person at the right time for the Wallabies. “He’s got a great CV – he’s a good pair of hands and is experienced, so it’s good timing for Australia and him,” Robertson stated while attending the Australian Open.

With dates and venues for the 2024 Bledisloe Cup series yet to be announced, anticipation is already high. The Wallabies, aiming to end a drought of over 20 years, will face the All Blacks in a two-Test series, one in Australia and one in New Zealand.

Despite the contrasting World Cup performances, Robertson expects Australia to be highly competitive. Reflecting on recent Bledisloe encounters, he highlighted the close contests, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the rivalry. “It comes down to the passion on both sides; it’s really clear every time you see it played,” Robertson remarked. “The importance on the night, it’s really critical, doesn’t matter what form.”

In the backdrop of coaching changes, the Wallabies have secured the commitment of hooker Dave Porecki until at least the end of 2026. Having led the team during the World Cup in the absence of injured captain Will Skelton, Porecki’s extension adds experience and leadership to the Australian squad.

As the Bledisloe Cup series draws near, rugby fans can expect an intense battle between the All Blacks and the Wallabies, with both teams eager to make their mark under new coaching leadership.
