Scott McDonnell WTNH News 8 Names To 6 p.m. Anchor Slot

WTNH News 8 has announced that one-time WFSB reporter Scott McDonnell will be the new co-anchor of the 6 p.m. news alongside Ann Nyberg starting Monday.

Mark Higgins, general manager and vice president of WTNH announced the hiring in a release and said, “Scott’s commitment to reporting important local and national news aligns with our mission of having the backs of our viewers and telling the stories that impact their lives.”

After WFSB, McDonnell went on a report in his home state of Massachusetts and in Florida covering local and national stories, including the death of Trayvon Martin. For the past two years, he has anchored the weekend morning news and reported for KMBC in Kansas City.

New Haven station WTNH, which has two of the state’s longest-tenured news anchors in Nyberg and Keith Kountz, has had turnover on the anchor desk in the past several years.

It accelerated after the station didn’t renew the contracts of Matt Scott or Geoff Fox in the weather center, which led to stints by Steve Villanueva (now at WNBC-4), Steve McLaughlin, Erika Martin, Erica Grow, and Kyla Grogan.

Then the steady weekday morning team dissolved when Chris Velardi went to a public relations firm in May 2015 and Ali Reed bowed out in September (which was a double loss since it meant the end of “anchor dog” Nell, a cocker spaniel/poodle mix, or cockapoo).

WTNH also separated with veteran anchor Jim Watkins (who was doing weekends) and then longtime weeknight sports anchor Noah Finz, who had been anchoring for 18 years, since Bob Picozzi.
