Devo: Abby Wambach got married again and I’m happy for her
The former United States soccer star from Pittsford got married to Melton, a popular Christian blogger, on Sunday. Jeff DiVeronica
Abby Wambach got remarried on Sunday. She married Glennon Doyle Melton, 41, a popular Christian blogger. The couple posted pictures on Instagram on Monday announcing their nuptials, and I’m super happy for Abby, who turns 37 on June 2.
It’d be an exaggeration to say she walked through hell to find her new happiness, but if you read her autobiography, Forward, which was released last September you know what I mean.
The early part of 2016 turned her life around. That DUI charge in April, less than five months after the Pittsford native retired, was the trigger to it all. She was an alcoholic.
She was done hiding and if she didn’t stop, Abby thought it might kill her. The line in her book that showed me how brutally honest she was being in her memoir, which I think was a way to cleanse her soul and start over, was that she didn’t just go into liquor stores and buy a regular-sized bottle of vodka. She grabbed the one with a handle on it.
Excerpts from Abby Wambach’s just-released memoir
The greatest goal-scorer in soccer history also detailed in the book her failing marriage to Sarah Huffman, her former teammate with the Western New York Flash in 2013 and 2014 and prior to that with a couple of other pro club teams.
They got married in October of 2013, a few months after Abby eclipsed Mia Hamm’s all-time goal-scoring record. It was beautiful, the culmination of their long courtship and it happened with family and friends in a spectacular setting in Hawaii. Fairy-tale stuff, right?
Didn’t matter. People grow apart, especially if they don’t work at not doing so. Their divorce must have gone through sometime last year. But now I have something in common with Abby, whom I’ve covered since she was in high school at Our Lady of Mercy.
We’re both divorced.
And we’re both happier now.
