Mark was born in the South Australian town of Waikerie. He was drafted by the Adelaide Crows in 1992 as a 16-year-old high schooler after being recruited by SANFL outfit West Adelaide.
In 1993, he made his AFL debut. In 1994, Ricciuto was named to his first All-Australian team as a 19-year-old.

Ricciuto represented Waikerie’s A grade in the 2008 ANZAC Day battle against Loxton. The match was won by Waikerie with a score of 38 points.
