Sanjay Shah is a former Kenyan citizen who now resides in the United States. In 2004, he renounced his Kenyan passport and travelled to the United Kingdom on a British Overseas Citizen passport, which allows him to enter but not stay in the country permanently.
He was subsequently deported to Kenya, where he conducted a 13-month sit-in in the international section of Nairobi International Airport, between the departure lounges and the immigration offices, during which he was arrested. He cleaned himself in public restrooms and consumed and drank presents from café employees and other travellers. On July 12, 2005, he was granted full British citizenship, which was followed by the issuance of a British passport and the booking of another trip to the United Kingdom.
