A woman speaks after sailboat crash in Brevard County: ‘It was crazy’
For the first time, WESH 2 News heard from a woman who was on a sailboat when it crashed into another boat. It happened in part of the Banana River in Brevard County. The boat that hers hit had already crashed into power lines.
“We were on the opposite side of the power lines. We happened to look over, and there was a big sailboat coming,” Samantha Youngkin said.
Youngkin was on her boyfriend’s 18-foot boat Friday when she witnessed a sailboat with 14 people on board crash into some power lines.
“We thought it was a firework, and then we heard a bunch of screaming and it turns out that, you know, it had caught on fire,” she said.
Youngkin said an electric arc caused a large flash, but the sailboat didn’t stop once it hit the power lines. It continued heading in Youngkin’s direction before colliding with their boat.
“It was crazy! I jumped on the sailboat immediately, because we had a fire extinguisher, so my first thought was to get the fire out,” she said.
Youngkin said they pulled about 10 people onto their boat as smoke billowed from the cabin area, including several kids.
Officials say three people on board were burned by the flash. They were taken to a local hospital once they reached the shore.
Youngkin’s says she was acting on pure adrenaline that day, but now she is hoping she can connect with the people she saved to see how they’re recovering.
“I just really want to reach out and see how everyone’s doing. I mean, that’s just being human. We have to help,” she said.
Parent Outraged Over ‘Main Sniper’ Shirt, Outfit Resembling Bulletproof Vest on Display at Florida Store
After a spate of mass shootings across the United States, one parent who was back-to-school shopping at a Florida mall was outraged to see a display that many are calling offensive, NBC affiliate WESH reported.
A mother, who did not want to be identified, says the store display not only concerned her, but it scared her children.
She said her back-to-school shopping over the weekend was stopped short by the display at Showroom in the West Oaks Mall in Ocoee, Florida.
One mannequin was wearing a shirt that read “main sniper,” and another was wearing an outfit resembling a bulletproof vest.
“We’re in the midst of mourning two other massacres in this country within 13 hours of each other, the flags are lowered at half staff again, and this is on display in an area where people are back-to-school shopping?” she said.
The mother said she called the store multiple times, but can’t seem to get a straight answer.
