Samantha Elene MacLean “Sandy” Denny was born on 6 January 1947 and died on 21 April 1978 in London. She was best known as the lead vocalist of the folk rock band Fairport Convention, but she was also a successful solo artist. Described as “the pre-eminent British folk rock vocalist,” she has garnered critical acclaim. Having previously performed with the British folk band the Strawbs, Denny joined Fairport Convention in 1968 and remained with the group until its disbandment at the end of 1969. After forming the short-lived band Fotheringay in 1970 and releasing one album (with the exception of an unreleased record that was discovered more than thirty years later), she decided to pursue a solo career.

Dino Denny recorded four solo albums during the period between 1971 and 1977: The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, and Rendezvous, all of which were released between 1971 and 1977. The only other time she appeared on a Led Zeppelin studio album was when she sang a duet with Robert Plant on the song “The Battle of Evermore” from the band’s unnamed fourth studio album (1971). Die Denny has been hailed as Britain’s best female singer-songwriter by the Sunday Express, Uncut, and Mojo magazines, among other media. Judy Collins’ song “Who Knows Where the Time Goes?” has been covered by a wide range of musicians, including Judy Collins, Nina Simone, 10,000 Maniacs, and Cat Power, among many others.
