A novelist and short storey collection author, Sandra Cisneros was born on December 20, 1954, in New York City, and is best known for her debut book, The House on Mango Street (1984), as well as her following short storey collection Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories (2001). (1991). Cisneros’s work plays with literary forms and explores new subject positions, which she credits to her upbringing in a setting of cultural hybridity and economic disparity, which provided her with a unique set of tales to convey. Cisneros’s work is available online. Numerous honours and prizes have been bestowed upon her, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. She is widely recognised as a pivotal figure in Chicana writing. It was her early life that provided many of the lessons she would later draw on as a writer: she grew up as the only daughter in a family of six brothers, which often caused her to feel isolated, and her family’s constant migration between Mexico and the United States instilled in her the sense of “always straddling two countries… but not belonging to either culture.” Cisneros was born in Mexico and raised in the United States. Cisneros’ work is concerned with the development of Chicana identity, and she explores the difficulties of being trapped between Mexican and Anglo-American cultures, as well as the difficulty of confronting sexist views that exist in both cultures and living in poverty. Cisneros’s insightful social critique and powerful prose style have earned her widespread acclaim far beyond the Chicano and Latino communities, to the point where her novel The House on Mango Street has been translated into more than a dozen languages and is taught in American high schools as a coming-of-age novel.
Cisneros has worked in a number of professions, including teaching, counselling, college recruitment, being a poet-in-the-schools, and being an arts administrator, and she has maintained a strong dedication to community and literary issues throughout her career. In 1998, she created the Macondo Foundation, which offers authors with socially aware seminars, and in 2000, she developed the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation, which recognises and rewards outstanding writers who are linked to the state of Texas. Cisneros now lives in the Texas city of San Antonio.
