American jazz vocalist Samara Joy McLendon, better known by her stage name Samara Joy, has won a Grammy Award. She was voted Jazz Times’ Best New Artist for 2021 after winning the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019.
Biography
Joy, who is a Bronx native from the Castle Hill neighborhood, was born in 1999 into a musical family. Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, her paternal grandparents, founded the Philadelphia gospel ensemble The Savettes.
She was introduced to gospel greats like The Clark Sisters by her father, a bass player who has performed with gospel singer/songwriter/producer Andraé Crouch, and soul and Motown were also prominent in her upbringing.
