His love for real estate started at a young age. While still in school at the University of Michigan, he managed a 15-unit apartment building in exchange for free room-and-board. He was soon managing the landlord’s other properties. Together with his Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity brother Robert H Lurie, he won a contract with a large apartment development owner in Ann Arbor. The development owner was impressed with his knowledge of what students wanted.
At the time of his graduation from the University of Michigan Law School in 1966, he and Lurie were managing well over 4000 apartments. In addition, they owned 100-200 units.
He sold his interest in the management company to Lurie and moved to Chicago after school. He worked as a lawyer after graduation, but this only lasted for a week before he decided that the profession did not suit him. In addition, he purchased several apartment buildings in Reno, Nevada including the Arlington Towers.
