Sadao Iizuka, a renowned tokusatsu animator best known for animating the beams of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Ultraman in the 1960s, passed away on March 24 at 9:10 a.m., at the age of 88, according to the Anime Tokusatsu Archive Centre (ATAC).

Sadao Iizuka, also known by his stage name Den-san, is a Japanese illustrator, animator, photographer, and writer.

In 1954, he joined Toho Studios to work in the special effects art department for Godzilla under the direction of Akira Watanabe. His lengthy career has continued with the release of the movie Shin Ultraman.

Iizuka contributed to nearly every Toho tokusatsu project up until 1972, when he, Koichi Takano, and Minoru Nakano left the business to found Den Film Effects, their own special effects studio.

The business would later assist Toei, Toho, Tsuburaya Productions, and Daiei with a variety of motion pictures and television shows.
