Ruthless Killer Leatherface Real Name Has Been Changed For A Few Times Now, Who Is He Actually Based On?

Throughout the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre films, Leatherface’s identity has changed a few times, but what is his real name?

In the ninth edition of the “Texas Chainsaw” franchise, the infamous serial murderer “Leatherface” returns to brutally murder people.

Although Leatherface is a well-known name, the character’s true identity remains a mystery.

Leatherface’s given name has changed several times over the years.

Leatherface, unlike his horror contemporaries, Micahel Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger are rarely referred to by his given name.

In the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” he goes by the moniker “Leatherface” (1974).

Audiences weren’t introduced to the Sawyer family until “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2″ (1986) when Leatherface’s name was revealed to be Bubba Sawyer.

In the Michael Bay-produced 2003 remake, the cannibalistic family’s surname was altered from Sawyer to Hewitt.

In this continuity, Leatherface’s full name was Thomas Brown Hewitt.

Leatherface’s name was altered again to Jedidiah Sawyer in 2013’s “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” which served as a direct sequel to the originals.

What Is Leatherface From Texas Chainsaw Massacre Real Name

In the first two films, Leatherface was called Bubba Sawyer.

It’s unclear whether Bubba was a nickname, but it was his given name.

The third film, “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” has already blurred the timeframe (1990).

It reckons the events of TCM2, particularly the extermination of Leatherface and the Sawyer family.

TCM3 is thus a straight sequel to the original, as is the case with recent franchise reboots such as “Halloween” (2018) and the impending “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2022).

TCM3 referred to Leatherface as’ Junior, ‘with the Sawyer family’s surname remaining the same.

Leatherface: Which Killer Is The Character-Based On?

Leatherface was largely based on Gein, right down to the skin mask.

Tobe Hooper has said that some details of the murders themselves, including Leatherface’s iconic skin mask, were based on the murders of serial killer Ed Gein.

The Gein murders are believed to have taken place between 1954 and 1957. However, Gein was based in Wisconsin, not Texas.
