Ruth Ann Buzzi, born July 24, 1936, is an American actress and comedian who has worked on stage, in film, and on television. She became well-known for her outstanding performances on the iconic comic variety show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, which aired from 1968 until 1973.

Buzzi’s exceptional talent earned her a Golden Globe Award and five Emmy nominations for her performance on the show.

Buzzi had already begun a successful acting career and held a union card for musical and comedy revues before finishing her undergraduate study. During her undergraduate summer break at the age of 19, she landed her first job in show business, touring with singer Rudy Vallee in a live musical and comedy act.

This experience enabled her to graduate with an Actors’ Equity Association union card. She moved to New York City after college, where she quickly secured a starring role in an off-Broadway musical revue, the first of 19 performances she would give around the East Coast.

During this period, she had the opportunity to collaborate with other rising stars like Barbra Streisand, Joan Rivers, Dom DeLuise, Bernadette Peters, and Carol Burnett.

Buzzi also appeared in musical variety performances in New York and starred in several nationally famous television advertisements, some of which won significant accolades such as the Clio Award.

Ruth Buzzi Hairnet

Gladys Ormphby, a “spinster” with drab brown attire and a bun of hair covered by a hairnet fastened in the center of her forehead, was the persona for which she was most known. Buzzi first assumed this look while playing Agnes Gooch in a school production of Auntie Mame. She would frequently use her pocketbook as a weapon in plays, slapping anyone who aroused her wrath.
