Russell Jay “Rusty” Kuntz (/kunts/; born February 4, 1955) is an outfielder and designated hitter in Major League Baseball (MLB). Between 1979 and 1985, he was a member of the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, and Detroit Tigers. During his playing career, he never played in more than 84 games in a single season. Kuntz hit a decisive run batted in pop fly to the second baseman in the last game of the 1984 World Series (RBI). Kuntz attended high school and community college in Kansas and California, where he participated in three sports.
Before being drafted in the 11th round of the 1977 MLB Draft by the White Sox, he got to the Division III World Series twice with California State University, Stanislaus. Kuntz was unable to reclaim his form the next year after the 1984 season. Early in the 1985 season, he was relegated to the lower levels and was no longer a player in professional baseball. Kuntz has worked for numerous MLB teams after his playing days ended, including the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Florida Marlins, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s served as a general manager’s assistant, a minor league coach, a roving instructor, and a big league base coach. He has been the first base coach for the Kansas City Royals since 2012. Rusty’s name has piqued the interest of sportswriters due to its resemblance to a filthy expression.
