In a strike by Ukrainian forces, Yakov Rezantsev was killed. His unit was stationed as a command post at the Chornobaivka airbase in Kherson.
Ukraine’s military had assaulted the airbase on multiple occasions, and a Ukrainian strike on the base had also killed a Russian lieutenant general named Andrei Mordvichev.

Rezanstev was promoted to Major General in 2013. From 2013 until 2016, he was the Chief of Staff of the 20th Guard Combined Arms Army of the Western Military District.
Yakov was the commander of the Central Military District’s 41st Combined Arms Army (Novosibirsk).
From August 2020 to August 2021, he was the commander of the Southern Military Districts 49th Combined Arms Army (Stavropol).
In 2021, Yakov was appointed lieutenant-general.
